2021 Season
A Circle Around Spectacle Reef
On May 23rd, 2021 the Spectacle Reef Preservation Team made it's first run out to the Light. Our visit was short but it allowed us to check out a few concerns (no midges!) and refine our plans to begin the all volunteer restoration starting Memorial Day Weekend.
Memorial Day Weekend
The first volunteer trip out was a big success!
Special thanks to our volunteers Barb Falkenhagen, Scott Shields, and Karen Wells who were able to join us. The cleanup has started in the tower and fog building and we removed about 450lbs of material that was safely transported back to shore for proper disposal. Our “bathroom” consisting of a port-a-potty and camping sink is now ready for use. Also the hoist donated by Don Schank was installed on the crane and will be powered by the generator donated by Chuck Hayden. An operational crane will enable us to handle the more heavy items from the boat and will make life much easier for us. Hauling stuff up by hand is hard!
We also make a major discovery about our missing crane. Spectacle Reef use to have two five ton cranes located on the northwest and southeast corners of the crib. The northwest crane is still there but the fate of southeast one has been a bit of a mystery. The pedestal is visible in the water just off of the crib but the rest appeared gone. However, during this trip we discovered the main “cone” of the crane is right next to the crib on the east side. We’ll be looking into the possibility of salvaging and refurbishing both for reused on a replica crane.
